Perfect teaching tool PETALING JAYA, Aug 5:
The newspaper is a perfect teaching tool as far as English teacher Low Kim Khuan is concerned.
Low, 54, who has been teaching English at SMK Sri Permata for more than 15 years, uses articles, comic strips and English lessons published in local newspapers, including the ones in the New Straits Times."I have a collection of newspaper articles from 10 years ago to show my students every year." She said newspapers carried good real life stories, unlike text books."It is not only a good read but also a great tool for education as my students have picked up the habit of reading newspapers to improve their language and complete their school work," said Low who spends hours flicking through newspapers for materials. She added that the Adopt a Student Programme, introduced by the New Straits Times is a fantastic way to get the attention of younger readers and cultivate the reading habit.

Student Thomas Chin, 14, loves the New Straits Times, especially the Computimes pullout. "I make it a point to browse through the section since I am interested in learning about computers. But while browsing through, I also read the news section," said Chin.Another student, Renusha Sree, 14, reads the New Sunday Times every weekend to improve her English. "It is enjoyable and helps me keep abreast with current issues," said Renusha.
